Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) is currently accepting applications for 1-2 communications/digital internship position(s) in his Washington DC office for Summer 2024. Responsibilities include compiling daily news clips, maintaining and updating press lists, monitoring national, state, and local media, drafting and editing written materials, including press releases, op-eds, newsletters, and social copy, creating engaging social media content, graphics, and videos for the digital team and supporting the communications team with press conferences and live events. Additional responsibilities may include corresponding with and serving Massachusetts constituents by answering phones, giving Capitol tours, and organizing incoming messages, attending Senate committee hearings and briefings, and assisting with other administrative and legislative projects as necessary. All applicants must be proactive hard-workers—who have a demonstrated interest in press and/or digital media—with excellent writing, editing, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Ideal candidates can pay close attention to detail, multitask, and be a team player. Digital skills (i.e Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Canva, video editing, social media, etc.) are a plus. The DC internship program is directed toward current and recent undergraduate students. Backgrounds in journalism, communications, film, graphic design, and media studies are desirable but not required. Stipends are available at a rate of $15/hour pre-tax to students who could not otherwise afford to live or work in Washington DC.
