Background

DECRG is the World Bank's research department and is the largest unit within the Development Economics Vice Presidency, under the Chief Economist. DECRG provides high-quality economic information, data, analysis, research, and training to the Bank Group and its partners. DECRG's research programs generate and disseminate knowledge about development policies essential for achieving the World Bank's ultimate objective of poverty reduction.
Within DECRG, the Global Findex team manages an extensive database that provides in-depth data on how people save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. It is the world’s most comprehensive set of data on financial inclusion, offering consistent measures of people’s use of financial services across economies and over time. The first Global Findex database in 2011 was a landmark, delivering unprecedented insights into how people in more than 140 economies use financial services. Since then, three additional rounds of data have been published, with new information on mobile money and domestic payments, the latest collected in 2021. The team expects to begin data collection for the fifth round in early 2024.
The group seeks a Research Analyst in the Findex Group to manage, clean, and analyze this survey data. Additionally, the Analyst is expected to help generate work products for disseminating results from the data, including but not limited to PowerPoint presentations, talking points, and country-level briefs.

Duties and Accountabilities:

We are seeking a motivated and ambitious candidate with extensive experience in the areas of data management, statistical analysis, and visualization.
  • Play an integral role in data management, including leading the work to organize and present survey data from the Global Findex database and Gallup World Poll.
  • Create charts, graphs, and tables using advanced data visualization tools.
  • Run econometric analysis using one of the programming languages (e.g., Stata, R) and assist with outlining findings, as well as writing drafts of the analysis.
  • Prepare briefs, presentations, and talking points to help the team effectively communicate priorities and initiatives to all audiences in a structured manner.
  • Provide additional operational, research, communications, and other analytic support to team members.

Selection Criteria

  • Master's degree or equivalent in Economics, Development, Public Policy, Business Administration, or a related discipline with a strong quantitative orientation.
  • At least 5-7 years of post-graduate professional experience managing datasets with Stata and R.
  • Demonstrated professional expertise in data visualization using Stata and R (or Python). Familiarity with ArcGIS/QGIS and experience in building a website is preferred.
  • Knowledge of and interest in issues related to financial inclusion, digital financial services, and development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. In particular, the candidate will exhibit the ability to communicate ideas and interpret statistical data quickly and clearly, including with informative graphs, charts, and presentations.
  • Ability to write and speak fluently in English. Fluency in at least another World Bank language is a plus.
  • Willingness and ability to quickly learn new systems, with familiarity with WBG systems being an advantage. Familiarity with website development using the Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) platform is preferred.
  • Ability to work flexibly on a range of assignments and adapt to and prioritize various complex tasks as they evolve.
