ABOUT CBCAC
The Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded as a coalition of service providers and volunteers of Chicago’s Greater Chinatown area (Chinatown/Armour Square, Bridgeport, McKinley Park, Brighton Park, South Loop, Douglas/Bronzeville) to achieve community development through civic engagement, political empowerment and advocacy. CBCAC is also involved in initiatives impacting other Chicago neighborhoods and suburban areas where Chinese Americans live in significant numbers.
POSITION SUMMARY

The Summer Civic Engagement Intern Program is a collaboration between Chicago area public sector offices and CBCAC. The Internship will consist of supporting the public sector office’s day to day work and CBCAC’s current Community Organizing and Civic Engagement projects for the Greater Chinatown area. There will be many projects that require a wide range of skill sets, from administration to event planning to outreach. Topics can range from: small businesses, a Chinatown High School, public space, transportation, and more. With these, we are building conversations, knowledge, and voice amongst Chicago’s AAPI and Chinatown communities.

EXPECTED RESPONSIBILITIES
Support CBCAC’s and public sector partners’ civic engagement projects through research, project planning, outreach.
Coordinate civic engagement outreach through attending events, community building, and translation.
Support campaign strategies through data collection, analysis, and research.
Provides general administrative, communications and logistical support to advance the mission and priorities of CBCAC.
Current CBCAC Projects are (but not limited to):
Anti-Gentrification (working to provide support so residents can remain in the neighborhood without being displaced by new residential projects aimed at high income individuals)
Chinatown Area High School (a project to advocate for and plan for a high school that will serve Chinatown, Bridgeport, and South Loop.)
Origins Youth Program (We focus on Asian-American identity, civic engagement, and building youth power. We will be implementing a youth-led issue-based project.
Great Rivers Project (surveying and analyzing data to create strategies for small businesses)
Redistricting (redrawing political boundaries to make Asian representation more equitable)
Chicago Connected (technology literacy classes and connecting families to the internet)
Administration (website redesign, social media, etc.)
Other Functions
Participates and assists in other CBCAC activities, such as social media, or attending community meetings and events, as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience:
Completed junior year in high school. Current undergraduate or graduate students preferred.
Previous work in administration, community organizing, and civic engagement is preferred.
Skills/Knowledge:
Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English required. Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) skills are highly desirable.
Ability to organize complex projects, often under pressure and with limited resources required.
Familiarity with Chicago’s Greater Chinatown Community and/or issues facing Asian/Chinese Americans desirable.
Flexibility and willingness to adapt.
Initiative and independence in supporting our programs
Collaborative and able to work on small teams, but be supported by a greater community.
Empathetic and eager to build community with diverse people.
DETAILS
40 hours per week, flexible schedule
Pay is $15/hr
Internship will be June 28- August 6, 2021 for 6 weeks.
As a condition of employment, must undergo a background check and complete requisite DCFS mandatory reporter training.
This position is either virtual or a hybrid virtual and in person arrangement (depending on the public office’s needs).
Optional access to CBCAC’s office.
