Job Description

Alex Bores, NYS Assemblymember representing the 73rd District, is seeking a Legislative Director to advance his policy agenda in Albany.

The Legislative Director (LD) will help drive the legislative agenda for the office, developing and implementing the strategy to push policy priorities and legislative goals; supervise and mentor the legislative interns and staff, and support other needs of the Assemblymember’s office as needed. The LD will work closely in conjunction with the Assemblymember, Legislative Aide, and other staff to ensure legislative strategy is incorporated into overall operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Driving the Assemblymember’s Legislative Agenda from idea to law.
  • Draft and revise legislation based on feedback from Program and Counsel, advocates, and others.
  • Meet with advocates, lobbyists, and other groups in Albany.
  • Evaluate legislation for cosponsorship.
  • Meet with other offices to garner support for bills.
  • Attend various breakfasts or receptions in Albany to garner support for legislative proposals.
  • Supervise and mentor the legislative interns and staff.
  • Other needs of the Assemblymember’s office as required.

The Legislative Director will be based in-person in Albany.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Prior experience in driving policy through the New York legislative process is required, whether from inside or outside a government office.
  • The ability to read a bill line-by-line, cross-reference other parts of law, find flaws, think about unintended consequences, and come up with creative fixes. If you are not comfortable reading and revising legislative text (not just memos), this will not be a good fit.
  • Prior staff management experience is preferred.

The annual salary range for this position is $60,000 - $75,000, dependent on experience.

This position offers the full suite of New York State Assembly employee benefits, including health, vision, and dental insurance as well as a retirement plan. Benefits also include sick days, vacation days, personal time, and observing all state holidays.
