The office of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seeks an experienced Communications Director to manage and coordinate all external communications activities for the Member and the office, based in Washington, DC. We welcome you to apply.
Essential Job Function: Oversee the office’s messaging, digital, and press strategy. The Communications Director will lead the office’s effort to reach constituents and supporters in creative and effective ways. This position is based in our DC Office at 250 Cannon and reports directly to the Chief of Staff.
Communications Director Role and Responsibilities:
- Very strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills;
- Worked closely with an elected official or candidate to realize their Communications strategy
- Management experience, including both full-time staff and consultants;
- Strong understanding of media environment and interest in evolving media platforms;
- Strong understanding and interest in digital media
- Knowledge of progressive politics and current issues and events in which the Member is involved;
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in the representation of the Member's positions on policy issues;
- Experience reaching a diverse constituency;
- Interest and experience in communicating about basic constituent services - and over all explaining government services and legislation in real terms
- Experience managing rapid response communications
- Work cooperatively and courteously with others, even under pressure;
- Familiarity with New York City and Hill press corp is preferred.
Duties:
- Develops and implements media and communications strategy for the Member
- Acts as the primary spokesperson and media liaison for the Member;
- Oversee management @RepAOC social media accounts
- Develop a strong understanding of Member’s voice and stylistic preference and ensure these are executed across all communications materials
- Organize six figure paid outreach plan for the Congressional Office, including but not limited to paid Facebook ads and district mailers;
- Works closely with the Legislative team to support the roll-out of legislation and the amplification of committee hearings
- Works closely with the District team to support town halls and other community events - as well as overall constituent outreach
- Remains abreast of current legislative and non-legislative issues about which the Member may be questioned;
- Evaluates current events and media reports in the district and the nation for their impact on the Member;
- Provides ideas and advice on the effect in the media of the Member's actions and legislative activities;
- Writes speeches for the Member; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Location and Work Environment: This position is an in-person position based in Washington, D.C. Our daily office operating hours are Monday through Friday between 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. When the House is not in session, there will be opportunities for remote work.
Compensation: $120,000 annually. Our office also provides a competitive benefits package that includes health insurance, dental, federal student loan payment (terms apply), up to 25 days of annual leave, 10 days of paid bereavement leave, and 16 weeks of paid, job-protected family leave.
