Insight is seeking a Manager of External Affairs & Public Engagement for the Insight Chicago Hospital & Medical Center to strategically manage and enhance the hospital's relationships with external stakeholders, including community groups, government entities, and civic, faith-based and nonprofit organizations. This role focuses on representing the hospital positively in the public sphere, advocating for its interests, fostering goodwill among key stakeholders, and connecting groups and individuals in the community who could benefit from the services we offer and bringing them into the hospital’s care setting. The Manager of External Affairs & Public Engagement helps to position the hospital as a trusted healthcare provider, a valued community partner, and a respected voice in the healthcare industry. Ultimately, the goal is to enhance the hospital's public image, support its strategic goals, contribute to its sustainability, and to improve the community’s health. The position reports to the Insight Director of Public Policy and Government Relations.
These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, following the mission, values, and behaviors of Insight Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and guests.

Key objectives of the role include:
  • Building and Maintaining Relationships: Cultivating strong relationships with external stakeholders to promote the hospital's mission, initiatives, and services.
  • Promoting Public Awareness: Developing and implementing communication strategies to raise awareness of the hospital's activities, achievements, and contributions to the community.
  • Advocacy and Influence: Advocating for the hospital's interests with government officials, regulatory bodies, and policymakers to shape healthcare policies and regulations in ways that benefit the organization and its patients.
  • Community Engagement: Engaging with the local community through public engagement programs, events, and partnerships to address healthcare needs, promote wellness, and support equity initiatives.

Responsibilities:
  • Government Relations:
    • Collaborate with hospital leadership and consultants to develop strategic plans and objectives for external affairs.
    • Advocate for the hospital's interests with government officials, regulatory agencies, and industry associations.
    • Builds and maintains professional relationships with members of the local, state, and federal government entities and agencies.
    • Participate in public policy making and lobbying efforts and provide input on proposed regulations or healthcare reforms.
    • Monitor and analyze proposed legislation and emerging issues to determine the potential impact on the hospital.
    • Support compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and reporting requirements.
    • Coordinate events to engage with elected and governmental officials at the hospital.
  • Public Engagement:
    • Develop partnerships with community organizations, non-profits, faith-based groups and other stakeholders to address healthcare needs and promote wellness initiatives.
    • Identify key stakeholders and cultivate relationships to advance the hospital's mission and strategic goals.
    • Support events and outreach programs that engage with the local community and build brand awareness.
    • Increase awareness of the hospital’s health care services in the immediate areas of service.
    • Support volunteer programs and employee engagement activities to support community service efforts.
    • Provide assessments and analyses of public opinion, market trends, and competitive landscape.
  • Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with other departments and cross-functional teams to achieve organizational objectives and enhance the hospital's reputation and standing in the community.
    • Work with the marketing department to inform effective public messaging on social media, website, and printed materials
    • Provide regular reports and updates to senior management on external affairs activities and outcomes.
    • Recognize and respect the cultural diversity of patients and the community.
Preferred Qualifications:
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, healthcare administration, business administration, or a related field is required. A master's degree in a relevant field is preferred.
Professional Experience: Significant experience (5-7 years or more) in public relations, external affairs, or a related field, preferably in a healthcare setting or a similarly regulated industry with a proven track record of developing and implementing successful engagement strategies and working with government officials and community stakeholders. Familiarity with healthcare regulations, compliance requirements, and industry trends, particularly those related to public relations, marketing, and government affairs in healthcare.
Strategic Skills: Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to identify emerging issues, assess their potential impact, and develop proactive strategies to address them. Ability to align external affairs initiatives with the hospital's overall strategic goals and objectives, and to measure the effectiveness of communication and advocacy efforts.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear, compelling messages for different audiences, including media, government officials, community leaders, and internal stakeholders. Proficiency in public speaking, media interviews, and other forms of external communication.
Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including government officials, community leaders, media representatives, and internal colleagues. Diplomacy, tact, and cultural sensitivity in dealing with various stakeholders and navigating complex political and social dynamics.
Leadership and Team Management: Experience in leading and managing teams, including setting goals, providing direction, and fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment. Ability to delegate tasks effectively, and prioritize competing demands. Experience with the traction/EOS management framework is a plus.
Adaptability and Resilience: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and to adapt quickly to changing priorities, deadlines, and stakeholder expectations. Ability to work hands-on with limited resources, independently or in a team setting. Resilience in handling pressure, criticism, and challenging situations, including crises or negative publicity.

Compensation:
The position’s compensation is expected to range from $70,000 to $90,000 per year based on experience, education and documented salary history.
