Position Summary:

The Democratic Attorneys General Association seeks a Director of Communications to lead, direct, and administer the committee’s earned and digital communications strategy. The Communications Director is responsible for building positive narratives around the individual and collective work of 25 sitting Democratic Attorneys General and supporting the political communications for more than 30 Attorney General races during the 2021-2022 cycle. The role will manage the internal communications and digital team as well as external consultants. The Communications Director will have directly interact with Attorneys General, partner organizations, campaigns, and state and national reporters.

This is not an entry-level position. Travel may be required to achieve goals and perform regular responsibilities. Salary is commensurate with experience. This application will remain open until Sunday, February 14, 2021.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Design and implement comprehensive external and internal communication strategies that elevate DAGA, Democratic Attorneys General, and AG races to varied audiences using tactics and channels including: web, social media, earned media, events, etc.

o Create media relations strategies to maximize committee and Democratic Attorneys General presence in the national political landscape including pitching, press conferences, media events, and more.

o Lead strategy and execute approval for digital content and publications, including microsites, digital ad campaigns, and more.

• Set quantitative and qualitative metrics and results to evaluate the effectiveness of communications strategies and ensure quality standards.

• Working across departments to meet department needs, align messaging, and lead response for crisis communications and rapid response.

• Manage DAGA's growing communications team, currently 4 people

• Lead development of internal communications content branded for DAGA and elevating individual Democratic Attorneys General, including understanding shifts in Democratic Party messaging and staying informed of all relevant aspects of political and policy issues related to state Attorneys General.

• Provide strategic guidance and execute approval of committee communications, including but not limited to internal and external materials including press materials, digital campaigns, video production, newsletters, and other materials produced by the Communications team.

• Collaborate with department directors to support internal and external marketing needs especially related to politics, fundraising, policy, and events.

• Ensure committee messaging aligns across media, email, social media, website, and other committee materials.

• Serve as an on-the-record spokesperson to the media on behalf of the committee, when needed.

• Supervise member(s) of the Communications team and external consultants

• Other communications responsibilities and special projects, as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree, Masters degree a plus

• At least eight years of relevant communications experience including deep working knowledge of the national media landscape and digital trends

• At least four years of staff and vendor management experience

• Comfort with budget management and execution

• Very strong writing skills and oral presentation skills

• Strong communication skills with senior audiences, ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization from media partners to senior leadership

• In-depth knowledge of earned and paid media strategy and investment principles/techniques

• Previous experience in political campaigns or political organization groups, such as PACs/c4s or nonprofit

• Familiarity with earned and digital media programs and tools including tools needed for content production

• Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and operate effectively in a fluid and fast-paced environment

• Project management skills that enable the juggling of multiple tasks, allocating and optimizing resources, and managing timelines

• Sense of humor and positive attitude

• DAGA’s office is open 9 AM – 6 PM Eastern, but extended and nontraditional work hours are required.

• DAGA offices are in downtown DC but are currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
