Job Description


Alex Bores, NYS Assemblymember representing the 73rd District, is seeking a District Director to lead community outreach in his Manhattan office.


The District Director constantly has their finger on the pulse of all things 73rd District. The Director will be responsible for connecting with community organizations, participating in local events, and standing in for the Assemblymember when he is in Albany and when the Assemblymember is in the District, the Director will accompany him at local events.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be the Assemblymember’s eyes and ears in the district, proactively raising and responding to matters relevant to the community at-large.
  • Attend all full board meetings of Community Boards 5, 6, and 8, as well as meetings of relevant committees.
  • Attend the police precinct councils for the 19th, 17th, Midtown North and Midtown South precincts.
  • Attend Community Education Council meetings for District 2.
  • Attend neighborhood association meetings relevant to the 73rd District, attend tenant association meetings the office is invited to, and serve as the Assemblymember’s proxy on any boards in which he serves ex-officio.
  • Plan, operationalize, and build for all events hosted AM Bores (generally 2-3 big events a year, and smaller monthly mobile office hours).
  • Stay up to date with local press (Our Town, Upper East Site, Patch) and social media/apps (Nextdoor, Citizen) to be alerted to local incidents quickly.
  • Join the Assemblymember for Friday morning subway meet-and-greets.
  • Handle budget requests from local groups and proactively suggest groups deserving of funding.
  • Support the Constituent Services Manager with constituent cases.
  • Recruit, supervise, and mentor the offices local interns.
  • Independently lead and deliver on any special projects as assigned.


The ideal candidate is deeply rooted in the community or will quickly become so. While this position is open to anyone who can establish residency within New York State before starting, there will be many in-person events on the East Side of Manhattan, so geographic proximity will make attending events easier.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Willingness to align hours with community groups’ meeting times.
  • NY State Residency/Ability to become a resident of NY State before the start date.
  • This is an in-person position. The District Director will be based in our district office on the East Side of Manhattan (near Grand Central) Monday to Friday.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior management and NY/NYC government office or campaign experience preferred.
  • Connections with local community groups or experience working in the 73rd district (from the Upper East Side down to Murray Hill) is a strong plus. 


The annual salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000, dependent on experience.


This position offers the full suite of New York State Assembly employee benefits, including health, vision, and dental insurance as well as a retirement plan. Travel to Albany is not expected, but if ever required, lodging and travel expenses will be reimbursed. Benefits also include sick days, vacation days, personal time, and observing all state holidays.
