ABOUT SHORE UP MARIN CITY

Shore Up Marin City (SUMC), is a multi-racial environmental justice program advocating for equitable inclusion, planning and emergency preparation. SUMC's areas of focus are climate change, sea level rise, water quality, resilience, habitat restoration, intergenerational leadership development, and advocacy.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The project consists of developing a community-supported conceptual design plan for the restoration of an urban wetland in Marin City to improve the functionality and resilience of native habitat that will support birds and other wildlife, serve as protection from flooding, and provide opportunities for local, underserved residents to engage with nature. It has been developed in partnership with Audubon.

The project will solicit robust public input that encourages creative visioning and community ownership over the site. An AmeriCorps member will be involved in all aspects of coordinating this project.

SCOPE OF SERVICE:

  • Community outreach and engagement plan including newsletter, media, and email communication, coordinating meetings both within and outside of Marin City
  • Coordination of public workshops, steering committee and agency meetings
  • Communications (ie. social media, newspaper, reports, flyers) to inform diverse audiences
  • Outreach to public, private and non-profit agencies
  • Youth education and training support, implementing student-selected projects related to the environmental issues within this scope

BASIC ELIGIBILITY:

  • Be US citizen or legal permanent resident
  • Have a high school diploma/GED
  •  Be 17 years old or older
  • Pass state criminal and FBI background checks, and a national check in the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry
  • Test negative for tuberculosis
  • Be able and willing to commit to the 10.5-month service term
  • Be able and willing to work remotely if needed due to COVID-19 public health considerations

 DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS/CHARACTERISTICS:

  • College degree and/or work experience in environmental policy, science, or planning, with an emphasis on energy or climate preferred, but other relevant experience is considered (internships, volunteer experience etc.)
  • A solid foundation of math and science coursework
  • Experience working with African American communities
  • Experience working on environmental justice issues
  • Comprehension of climate change science as well as water and air pollution
  • Community outreach and communications experience
  • Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills

AmeriCorps is a national service commitment that meets a community’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Climate Corps AmeriCorps partners with local government, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations across California to provide full-time service opportunities in the Bay Area supporting communities’ critical needs in building climate resilience.
