Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is the national umbrella organization for the nation’s leading network of women’s health care providers, educators, and advocates, serving women, men, teens and families. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is the advocacy and political arm of PPFA. Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Action Fund seeks a Director, Latino Media & Communications— a media and communications strategist with an expertise and established relationships in Spanish and Latino media, to expand our reach and introduce our brand to all Latinx audiences whether they are monolingual Spanish, bilingual, or monolingual English speakers . This job reports to Senior Director of Communications in the Communication and Culture division of PPFA. The media team provides all of the external media, press, and messaging work for the organization.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and execute strategy for Planned Parenthood’s Spanish-language communications campaigns and initiatives that span across all teams. Working closely with the Brand, Digital and Medial teams, among others.

Develop and execute strategic media plans to inform bilingual Latinos and Spanish-language communities on sexual and reproductive health issues and policies and promote PPFA as a trusted provider of reproductive health care, sexual health information, and sex education to their communities, as well as a strong advocate in the fight to protect their health care and access to a wide range of basic human rights.

Serve as on-the-record spokesperson for Spanish-language media outlets; represent and act on PPFA’s behalf to the media, at speaking opportunities and events when appropriate.

Drive and implement communications strategies on health care, advocacy, and cross-movement issues — both long-lead proactive pitching, developing campaigns, and responding to and shaping breaking news.

Manage the Latino Media & Communications Press Officer and ensure their growth and development internally.

Draft various media materials, including press releases, advisories, talking points, letters to the editor, op-eds, fact sheets, and briefings.

Continue to build and expand strong relationships with journalists, editors, and constituency media outlets as whole. Identify journalists and outlets that reach new and diverse audiences, develop plans to deepen relationships with them.

Manage the Latino Media & Communications budget.

Provide Spanish-language communications counsel to the PPFA Senior Vice President of Communications, the President of PPFA, and other PPFA and affiliate leaders.

Lead crisis communications strategy in Spanish on cross-movement issues, for affiliates and the Federation to protect the Planned Parenthood brand and maintain strong external partnerships.

Collaborate with the research team and other PPFA departments, conduct and lead Spanish-language research and develop research-driven campaigns alongside the Brand team that reach target audiences; inform strategies and tactics to further engage Latino and Spanish-langauge audiences with the Planned Parenthood brand.

Working closely with Strategic Partnerships, the Digital Products Lab and Corporate Relations teams to develop initiatives and strategies to help raise awareness of Planned Parenthood among U.S. Latinos.

Provide expert technical support to affiliates to identify and secure national media coverage of innovative health care delivery programs for Latino patients that are bilingual (English and Spanish), and monolingual (English or Spanish). Create and draft affiliate memos and media materials (e.g. talking points, op-eds); assistance executing local media plans (e.g. local pitching or on-the-ground press events); and trainings on cross-movement issues and reaching U.S. Hispanic audiences.

Ensure Strategic Partnership events are planned and staffed accordingly (e.g. conferences, activations, trainings) for constituency and cross-movement audiences,with a focus on Spanish-speaking communities, to further establish Planned Parenthood as a strong partner in the progressive movement.

Serve as an internal consultant to teams across the Federation on strategy and language to ensure projects include constituency communities, and communicate to and about them appropriately and authentically.

Develop a strong base of Spanish-speaking spokespeople from across the Federation at all levels who can speak to experiences and reproductive health needs of our key constituencies. Manage their media trainings, brief them for media interviews, and build their public-facing profiles.

Must be a team player with a positive attitude, and be able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and remain calm under pressure.

REQUIREMENTS

Seven years of experience working in communications directly with demonstrated strong relationships with Spanish language and Latino media outlets, reporters, and partner organizations.

Must possess excellent communication skills and a strong understanding of the Latino community. Must be well-spoken. Must write and edit proficiently and quickly bilingually, and have extensive knowledge of the operations of the news media, including print, online, blogs, radio and broadcast, particularly in Spanish and Latino media. Must have experience leading media strategy. A strong understanding of sexual and reproductive health, federal policy, and the wide range of policies that impact Latinos’ daily lives is strongly preferred. Fluency in Spanish is required.
