This is a Temporary Policy and Advocacy Coordinator Position:

This assignment is expected to start on February 28, 2024 and end on April 4, 2024

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 35 hours. This position is expected to be working in-person.

Location: 117 West 124th Street, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10027 (Harlem, NY)

Salary/Hourly Range: $20 - $22


Position Summary: Children’s Aid is seeking a resourceful, creative, and committed individual to join the Office of Public Policy team. The Office of Public Policy manages and implements an advocacy-driven strategy focused on issues that affect children and families living in New York City’s most under-resourced neighborhoods. The Policy and Advocacy Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director of Public Policy and will be responsible for supporting Children’s Aid’s policy agenda, managing operational functions, and working on select projects as they arise. The Policy and Advocacy Coordinator will also collaborate with our Marketing and Communications team to help drive the digital advocacy strategy for the organization and measure impact.

Essential Duties:

Policy

  • Work with the Assistant Director of Public Policy to promote cohesion on all public advocacy matters and ensure coordination of all CA youth and parent/family leadership work.
  • Monitor and disseminate legislative and policy updates relevant to Children’s Aid including pertinent city, state, and federal hearings, budget information, and advocacy alerts.
  • Support federal policy efforts including monitoring federal policies and legislation, tracking yearly appropriations process, and identifying potential grant funding opportunities at the federal level.
  • Testify at hearings, and attend select events and other events hosted by elected officials.
  • Co-lead and facilitate internal work groups on specific policy issue areas.
  • Support the management of the Community Building Summer Internship Program.
  • Make periodic requests to elected officials for support letters.

Advocacy

  • Lead select coalition activities (i.e. letter writing, email campaigns, phone banks, social media campaigns, etc.) and turn out staff, parents, and youth to participate.
  • Primary lead in developing digital advocacy infrastructure and strategy for the organization.
    • Develop materials that will aid in educating and mobilizing staff, parents, and youth on key policy and budget issues (i.e. Advocacy Day Briefing Packets and Lobbying Manual).
    • Coordinate logistics for legislative events (including advocacy days, legislative visits, and legislative breakfasts).
    • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications department to customize digital and social media strategies.
    • Analyze the effectiveness of the social media strategy and develop responsive action plans based on organization goals.
    • Co-develop and co-deliver legislative, advocacy, and social media trainings for youth, families, and staff.

Operations

  • Provide administrative, technical, and clerical support to the Office of Public Policy team.
  • Coordinate logistics for Office of Public Policy meetings, including community events, advocacy days, and advocacy trainings.
  • Support government relations operations by maintaining a database of contacts, and monitoring pertinent committee hearings at the city, state, and federal levels.
  • Manage lobbying tracking and reporting at the City and State levels and coordinate lobbying trainings on a quarterly basis.
  • Manage Office of Public Policy web platforms (main website, Charlie, and Take Action pages).
  • In-person collaboration is an essential function of the job
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High-school diploma and 5 years of relevant experience in policy and advocacy role(s) required OR Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience.

  • Excellent attention to detail, creativity, and the initiative to solve or anticipate problems.
  • Experience working with youth and families on advocacy-related issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to utilize various social media platforms.
  • Ability to travel is required.
  • A passion for and commitment to mission-based work and social change, especially in the area of children, youth, and families.
