Homeward NYC, aba West End Residences, is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to providing housing and comprehensive support services for homeless individuals and families. We manage multiple LGBTQIA-affirming supportive housing sites, transitional shelters, and long-term affordable housing, all designed to foster stability, healing, and independence for our residents.
Overview
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the effective and efficient operation of the organization. As a strategic partner to the CEO, the COO oversees internal operations, supports program delivery, and ensures alignment with the organization?s mission, values, and strategic goals. This role is ideal for a mission-driven leader with a passion for social impact and a track record of operational excellence in the nonprofit sector.
Duties
Provide organizational oversight in the absence of Executive Director
Lead and manage core operational functions including human resources, IT, and Building Operations
Collaborate with the CEO and senior leadership to develop and execute strategic plans.
Strengthen organizational infrastructure to support program growth and sustainability.
Develop and monitor the operations budget and resource allocation to ensure fiscal responsibility.
Develop, implement, and monitor compliance with internal operational procedures and communication policies and systems.
Foster a culture of equity, inclusion, transparency, and continuous improvement.
Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations, grant requirements, and ethical standards.
Support talent development, performance management, and succession planning.
Serve as a liaison to the Board of Directors on operational matters.
Directly supervise the following department heads: Building Operations, IT and Personnel
Monitor, in conjunction with Director of Finance and Executive Director, the organization?s operating budget.
Ensure compliance with applicable City and State building codes.
Oversee property management and provide quarterly reports to CEO and Board of Directors properties.
Play an active role in organizational site expansion and oversee operational aspects of all future sites.
Negotiate and monitor all maintenance and technology service contracts.
Assess and approve all office and plant equipment purchases
Monitor utility costs for all company owned and managed buildings.
Monitor rent rolls and oversee management of housing court cases.

Perform other such tasks as may be assigned by the Executive Director.
Requirements
Minimum of 5 years of management experience, preferably in nonprofit or mission-driven organizations.
Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex operations.
Experience with nonprofit budgeting and reporting.
Experience with NYC Government contracting requirements.
Understanding of nonprofit governance, compliance, and funding structures.
Excellent strategic thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
Commitment to the organization?s mission and values.
Bachelor?s degree required, master?s degree in Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
