Job Description

The Center for Immigration Law and Policy at UCLA School of Law generates innovative ideas at the intersection of immigration scholarship and practice; serves as a hub for transforming those ideas into meaningful changes in immigration policy at the local, state, and national levels; and empowers students with unique opportunities for experiential learning through work with academics, practitioners, policymakers, and activists. The Center is seeking a Director of Strategic Communications ("Director"). The Director will be an integral part of the Center's Leadership Team, providing strategic expertise in reaching and engaging diverse and sophisticated audiences, including policymakers, advocates, media, and immigrant communities themselves to inform and reshape narratives in immigration law and policy. The Director, in coordination with CILP Leadership and with input from CILP staff, will develop and execute a robust strategic communications plan that includes written, visual, and digital components, with the goal of reshaping dominant narratives in the field. The Director will work with CILP leadership to develop and execute CILP's communication and marketing strategy to ensure that the program is highly visible. Additional duties include supervising the Center's two-person Communications team; leading the development, implementation, and delivery of the Center's day-to-day communications work - including its social media presence, media relationships and outreach, website presence, press events, etc.; conceiving and executing highly-visible events that further the Center's mission; building and managing the Center's relationships with a deep network of journalists, campus communications professionals, and other key collaborators working in immigration law and policy; and participating in the Center's fundraising activities, including donor engagement.


Salary & Compensation



  • UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications


  • 10+ years Progressive work experience in strategic communications, outreach and/or social media. (Required)
  • Experience establishing, managing, and evaluating collaborative projects, fostering team support and positive engagement from staff at all levels of a professional organization and with diverse backgrounds (Required) And
  • Experience conceiving and writing clean and engaging content for marketing materials, digital platforms, talking points/speeches, and social media platforms. (Required) And
  • Experience supervising staff or working as a team lead. (Required) And
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications and database software in a windows environment. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive, develop, implement, and evaluate communications, marketing, and narrative change strategies with a high degree of professionalism, sensitivity, and integrity. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with high-level academic and/or administrative leadership and senior departmental staff to identify communication needs and to conceive and execute programs and services to meet such needs. (Required)
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with people at all levels in the organization, law school and beyond, including faculty, students, people working on immigration issues outside the university community, and immigrant community members. (Required)
  • Advanced ability to initiate activities independently and organize, prioritize and complete work in a timely manner despite competing deadlines and requests in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Strong time management skills. (Required)
  • Excellent reading comprehension, writing, and editing skills, including ability to translate complex research for broad audiences. (Required)
  • Comprehensive, current technical knowledge - including knowledge of graphic design software and tools with the ability to fully utilize the capabilities of new media to produce elements that can translate across different web and print media (Required)
  • Advanced knowledge about immigration law and policy, including familiarity with immigration policy and related social movements. (Required)
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem resolution skills. (Required)
  • Strategic vision and keen insight into the cultural and narrative context for immigration and immigrants. (Required)
  • Ability to handle all information with sensitivity, discretion and solid judgment. (Required)
  • Spanish language proficiency, both written and verbal. (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of UC or UCLA departments, policies, regulations, guidelines and resource. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations


  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications or English or equivalent combination of education and professional experience (Required)
