WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

Our development team at The Nature Conservancy plays a critical role in achieving our mission to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends. This position would be joining a dynamic team, playing a vital in-house development operations role that focuses on building and managing an effective successful relationship management and moves management systems. This is not an out-the-door fundraising position but is instead focused on driving the behind-the-scenes major gifts fundraising processes and facilitating team support and accountability to meet fundraising goals.

The Major Gifts Manager (MGM) will reside in Michigan and work as part of the Ohio and Michigan development programs, with the goal of increasing overall fundraising activity for TNC. The MGM will use proactive, efficient systems that keep the development team focused on successful relationship management and a clear donor focus. The primary responsibility of the Major Gifts Manager is to drive the major gifts fundraising process with an emphasis on building and effectively managing the donor portfolios and facilitating team support and accountability to meet fundraising goals.

They will provide recommendations and targeted training related to the functional activity they manage. The MGM must have advanced knowledge of the CRM systems and resources utilized for moves management; applies knowledge to managing support and coordinating communications related to the resources. They will develop documentation, adapt processes, and participate in the enhancement of systems and tools used by the team. The MGM will keep up-to-date on market trends and best practices to improve services. The Major Gifts Manager works in close cooperation with any or all of the following: Conservancy staff, the state director, donors, volunteers, vendors, public agencies, financial institutions, and legal and accounting professionals. They will organize and coordinate diverse activities, projecting outcomes, and implementing solutions in consultation with leadership.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Organize and lead portfolio review meetings with fundraisers to assure timely cultivation, solicitation, follow-up, data entry and tracking of new and current prospects, and strategy development.
  • Manage the discovery pipeline process for the team to ensure the ongoing identification and qualification of new major donors and prospects.
  • Collaborate with fundraisers, the operations manager, and the communications team on appeal and outreach strategies for major donors.
  • Serve as a liaison to TNC’s worldwide office, state chapters, and international field offices for questions related to opportunities, donor strategies, and mailing lists review.
  • Participate in Major Gifts Manager network and other position-related calls/networks to learn about best practices and organizational requirements for their role; effectively communicate or distribute information to assist staff in making decisions, solving problems, and improving workflow.
  • As needed: General management of team operations and coordination of development team activity; Development team planning; Manage the coordination and logistics of team calls and team meetings/retreats
  • As needed: Manage and track team financial measurables/monthly metrics and point person for pulling fundraising reports; help manage budget and goal-setting process
  • As needed: Provide additional support to the Development team including donor research
  • Act independently within broad program goals to prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions and exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
  • Ensure programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
  • Financial responsibility includes working within a budget and negotiating and contracting with vendors.
  • Occasional regional travel for training, retreats, and events.
  • The work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
  • Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.

The compensation range for this position begins at $64,000 and is commensurate with skills and experience.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

•   Bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience or equivalent combination.

•   Experience coordinating projects.

•   Experience generating reports and analyzing and interpreting data.

•   Experience with current technology in relevant fields.

•   Experience working across departments.

•   Experience, coursework, or other training in principles and practices of the relevant field.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•   Experience with database management.

•   Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.

•   Ability to implement complex processes.

•   Ability to use existing technology to achieve desired results. 

•   Demonstrated experience using diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate staff.

•   Experience interpreting guidelines to achieve desired results.

•   Experience supervising staff, interns, and/or volunteers.

•   Experience with database management.

•   Knowledge of current trends in the specific field.

•   Strong organization and negotiating skills, accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks.

•   Successful experience implementing strategic program goals.

•   Understanding of basic accounting principles.
