Job Description
The Press Secretary serves as a key spokesperson and media liaison for the Western Republican US Senator, working closely with the Communications Director to execute an effective and proactive media strategy. This role requires excellent judgment, strong writing skills, and the ability to manage multiple communications projects under tight deadlines. The Press Secretary helps shape the Senator’s public message and ensure that communications are clear, timely, and aligned with legislative and political priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a primary point of contact for reporters and media outlets; respond to press inquiries and coordinate interviews.
- Draft and distribute press releases, statements, op-eds, and media advisories.
- Assist in developing messaging and communications strategy to promote the Senator’s priorities and policy positions.
- Monitor media coverage, flag key developments, and provide media briefings and summaries to staff.
- Coordinate closely with legislative and state teams to ensure communications reflect current activities and priorities.
- Manage press lists and build relationships with local and national reporters.
- Help plan and staff press events, interviews, and media availabilities—both in D.C. and in-state.
- Collaborate with the digital team to amplify earned media on social platforms.
- Travel with the Senator for major announcements or press-intensive events as needed.
- Provide rapid response and help shape the office’s media posture during breaking news or high-profile moments.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a Press Secretary or Deputy Press Secretary in US Senate
- Familiarity with Utah media preferred
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong news judgment and familiarity with the media landscape, including key D.C. and local Utah outlets (if applicable).
- Ability to think strategically, work independently, and maintain professionalism under pressure.
- Comfortable representing the office in on-the-record conversations.
- Knowledge of the legislative process and the Senator’s policy interests.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
Preferred Experience:
- Background in journalism, public relations, or political communications.
- Familiarity with Utah political landscape (if applicable).
- Experience working with regional and national broadcast media.
Compensation:
Commensurate with experience and in line with Senate salary guidelines.
