 About Sandy Hook Promise

Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization committed to protecting all children from gun violence in schools, homes, and communities. The SHP Action Fund champions a holistic policy platform that promotes gun safety, youth mental health, and violence prevention education. The organization works at the state and federal level to pass nonpartisan legislation through inclusive partnerships, diverse grassroots education, and community mobilization. It is part of Sandy Hook Promise , founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.

Position Summary

The Federal Policy Senior Associate will be located in Washington, D.C., with flexibility to work from both the D.C. office and their home. The Federal Policy Senior Associate is an essential member of the Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund and is responsible for supporting SHPs planning, development, and implementation of legislative initiatives at the federal level. They provide research and analysis of policy in the areas of school safety, youth mental health, and gun violence prevention to advance the Action Funds mission. This role reports to the Vice President, Federal Policy and Partnerships.

 Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analysis to assist in carrying out the policy teams federal priorities
  • Track and brief managers on all federal legislative, regulatory, and litigation developments on SHP priority issues
  • Track, analyze, and identify opportunities for SHP to support platform-aligned gun safety, youth mental health and school safety legislation at the federal level
  • Monitor and attend briefings, hearings, panels, and events related to SHP priorities in Congress and hosted by mission-aligned organizations; brief policy team on key learnings and resources
  • Work with team to help identify and build relationships with mission aligned partners to advance federal policy priorities
  • Develop, maintain, and distribute policy letters, testimony and materials for Congress and other external stakeholders in coordination with the policy and communications teams to advance SHP priorities
  • Support SHPs legislative advocacy by educating and maintaining outreach to Congressional offices
  • Develop policy materials to support SHP policy and oversee organization/tracking of these materials
  • Coordinate with members of other teams internally to capture stories to support federal policy priorities
  • Plan and coordinate logistics for policy-related events and briefings
  • Maintain and respond to the policy team phone line, voicemails, and info@shp emails
  • Additional duties as assigned
  • Minimal travel (0-10%)


Qualifications

  • 2+ years of direct experience with/in policy advocacy, with some experience working at or with federal policy. This may include experience attained interning, volunteering, or through paid employment with a nonprofit, federal agency, elected or appointed official, or in public policy, advocacy, or government affairs.
  • Excellent writing, research, and verbal communications skills
  • Commitment to Sandy Hook Promises mission and goals
  • Demonstrated commitment to REDI principles
  • Understanding of political landscape and federal legislative processes and a commitment to bipartisan work
  • Analytic skills and a demonstrated ability to think strategically
  • Strong self-starter with ability to manage up
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Familiarity with, and ability to use, the Microsoft suite of programs (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

The starting salary for this position is $50,000.

Our organization operates within a distributed workforce, allowing for location flexibility across the country for most positions. We provide remote office support for all staff, which includes a laptop, home office reimbursement, and monthly cell phone reimbursement up to $50.
