Job Description
The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.
- Please note that this is a short-term full-time role that will last for 6 months.
We are seeking a nimble editor who’s equally at home with breaking news and big ideas to help edit our wide-ranging suite of newsletters. You will work closely with multiple staff and contributing writers, shepherding their newsletter editions from start to finish. The heart of this work will be providing quick and careful edits that are true to each writer’s distinct voice and perspective, but you will also suggest or help sharpen ideas , write vivid and effective headlines and subject lines, and communicate insights you glean from performance metrics. As needed, you will also oversee fact-checks and legal reads, aid with production and promotion, etc.
The ideal candidate will have experience editing opinion and/or news analysis on a range of topics, and the confidence and skill to help well-established writers deliver their best work on a quick turnaround. This person should also be deeply engaged with the news and online conversation, particularly around domestic politics and the culture wars, Russia and Ukraine, and the pandemic. They must also have a keen interest in advancing The Atlantic’s goal of hosting diverse viewpoints and heterodoxical arguments. Communication, cooperation, and a strong sense of curiosity are essential.
Other Qualifications Of The Ideal Candidate Include
- 4+ years of editing experience, including breaking news and opinion
- Deep knowledge of the current newsletter landscape, including on Substack and at leading newspapers and magazines
- Generous, patient, and collaborative approach to editing
- Exceptional time management and the ability to maintain the cadences of multiple newsletters
- A magazine sensibility, with a passion for ideas
