Roosevelt’s Work
The Roosevelt Institute takes on today’s greatest public policy challenges by advancing bold, cutting-edge research and policy ideas. We believe that the future of the American economy and our democracy depends on a new way of thinking about markets and government—and have successfully engaged with policymakers and the media to inform and shape public debate. Too few people hold too much economic and political power today, and we know that a stronger society is possible if we rectify this imbalance between private actors and the public. With a commitment to restructuring markets, transforming corporations, reviving democratic institutions, and reimagining the role of government, our work moves our nation toward a more resilient, equitable, and green future.
The Roosevelt Institute is a think tank, a student network, and the nonprofit partner to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum that, together, are learning from the past and working to redefine our collective future. Focusing on corporate and public power, labor and wages, and the economics of race and gender inequality, the Roosevelt Institute unifies experts, invests in young leaders, and advances progressive policies that bring the legacy of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt into the 21st century.
What You’ll Do
Roosevelt seeks an expert in how AI is changing work and society who is conversant in tech, policy, and industry conversations to help Roosevelt further develop our unique point of view on what an AI economy should look like and what policy interventions are necessary to get there.
This work will build on Roosevelt’s existing plans around AI’s potential effects on labor markets. The Special Advisor will work directly with the President and CEO and the Senior Vice President of the Think Tank to convene, explore, educate, and plan for Roosevelt’s interventions in this policy space.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Some duties may be flexible depending on the precise skill set of the person selected.
- Dive into Roosevelt’s mission, research, and policy work to determine what kinds of AI-related interventions (macroeconomic, corporate power, worker power, industrial policy, tax, etc.) make most sense for Roosevelt
- On behalf of the President and CEO and the Senior Vice President of the Think Tank, set up consultations and private convenings of leading thinkers across finance/economics, policy, research, organizing, tech, and politics to pressure test what is needed from a progressive vision and what role Roosevelt should play
- Cultivate a kitchen cabinet of advisors with varying perspectives to help mold the Rooseveltian worldview on AI as we develop out our work
- Design programming for our Roosevelt Society community, exposing them to AI expertise and beginning to bridge the tech-to-progressive-policy divide
- Coproduce with other Roosevelt staff a high-level thought piece laying out a first attempt at a Rooseveltian take on the future of AI
- With direction from the President and CEO, the Senior Vice President of the Think Tank, and other leaders at Roosevelt, tee up options for what Roosevelt’s next steps in this arena should be
What You’ll Have:
The right person will be:
- Steeped in AI technology and capable of thinking across policy, economics, and potentially foreign policy/national security
- Experienced at managing laterally and up in order to guide and support smart policy development and interact at the highest levels with outside partners, including funders
- An excellent project manager, able to quickly absorb the organization’s needs and gaps in foresight, develop a scope for the work plan for engaging outside stakeholders, and tee up thoughts, context, and choices to senior leadership
- Entrepreneurial and a self starter—willing to roll up their sleeves and do work ranging from administrative/scheduling to project management
- Ideally, a digital native—someone who not only reads about but is curious and exploratory about and uses AI tools and has an intuitive feel for how AI is changing the way people will work
- Capable of internalizing direction with minimal oversight and working effectively while being fairly autonomous
- Highly emotionally intelligent and able to understand and be sensitive to internal organizational dynamics and competing perspectives
- Fully aligned with Roosevelt’s worldview and excited about articulating a postneoliberal vision for AI, and at the same time unconstrained by policy perspectives that are not yet updated for the ways in which the technology might be transformative
- Drawing from 8-10+ years of relevant professional experience
