AFS-USA manages several U.S. government sponsored programs which provide scholarships for adolescents to participate in international exchange programs. The Sponsored Programs department at AFS focuses on maintaining relationships with the funder (U.S. Department of State) and incorporating the sponsored programs into overall AFS programming. AFS-USA participates in the following hosting programs: The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES), Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) and the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX). The primary role of the Sponsored Programs Admissions Coordinator is to manage the application systems and admissions processes for these programs.  


The Sponsored Programs Admissions Coordinator reports to the Senior Sponsored Programs Specialist. Among the Coordinator’s main responsibilities is to ensure that Sponsored Programs hosted student applications are integrated successfully into the standard AFS Admissions process as well as processes established with external organizations and stakeholders, while adhering to the reporting, programmatic and other requirements and features specific to each program.  


Additionally, the Admissions Coordinator will serve as a resource for his/her colleagues about Sponsored Programs and proactively work with his/her colleagues to aid them in fully understanding program-specific guidelines and requirements.


While this is a remote position, the ability to work from our New York office as needed is preferred. Applicants outside of New York but within the U.S. will still be considered.


We are currently looking for someone who has:

  • 2-4 years of experience in international educational exchange field or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree required in the field of International Relations, Internal Education or another related field
  • Proven ability to multitask and prioritize ongoing responsibilities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Keen attention to detail in all forms, especially written
  • Ability to handle emotionally intense situations and maintain calm under pressure          
  • Experience or a high level of comfort in an intercultural setting
  • Training and or teaching experience and skills strongly desired
  • Counseling or conflict management experience strongly desired
