Position:  Vice President, Government Relations 

Reports to: Senior Vice President, Head of Government Relations 


ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND 

The Federation of American Hospitals (FAH), founded in 1966, represents more than 1,000 tax-paying community hospitals and health systems across the United States. FAH members provide high-quality, affordable care in both urban and rural areas, including teaching, acute, inpatient rehabilitation, behavioral health, and long-term care hospitals. Members deliver a wide range of inpatient, ambulatory, post-acute, emergency, children’s, and cancer services in 46 states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

 

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Vice President, Government Relations, is a key member of the FAH advocacy team with responsibility for working to ensure that the FAH legislative agenda is achieved. This position works together with other members of the FAH team, including the policy and communications divisions, to craft policy, share intelligence and coordinate strategy. Successful candidates will be comfortable crafting and executing comprehensive advocacy strategies, while also anticipating and meeting the needs of a politically engaged membership. 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Serve as a primary liaison to Democratic Members of the House and Senate—and their staff—to advance the Federation’s priorities across a broad range of health policy issues. 
  • Collaborate closely with FAH’s policy, communications, and member engagement teams to ensure coordinated and effective advocacy efforts. 
  • Maintain a strong, trusted reputation with all stakeholders, including Capitol Hill, the Administration, and FAH member organizations. 
  • Help shape and execute the legislative components of the FAH Strategic Plan. 
  • Advise on political action committee annual fundraising plan and contribution strategy, with a particular focus on Democratic engagement. Engage in local and in‑district fundraising events for key Members of Congress. 
  • Travel regularly to member hospitals to support a variety of activities, including hosting roundtables with Members of Congress and Senators. 
  • Participate in and help staff FAH policy committees as needed. 
  • Represent FAH in external meetings with elected and appointed officials, congressional staff, and key stakeholder groups. 
  • Support FAH member engagement through hospital visits, fly‑ins, briefings, and national advocacy events. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor's degree required. Graduate degree preferred.  
  • Minimum of 5–10 years of experience in a Congressional office or committee, a federal agency, or in government relations for a corporation, trade association, or similar organization. 
  • Healthcare experience strongly preferred.  
  • PAC experience is welcomed but not required.

Salary range for this role is $197,000 - $314,700. Additionally, FAH offers a discretionary annual performance bonus to eligible employees.

  

WORK LOCATION 

FAH is headquartered in Washington, D.C., near the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station. The position is hybrid, with in-office work Monday-Thursday, optional remote work on Fridays, plus 15 additional remote days annually.
