ASPI opened its inaugural international office in Washington DC in 2022.

ASPI’s Washington DC office aims to play a vital role in shaping strategic policy thinking in Washington DC over the coming years. How the United States engages with the Indo-Pacific region, with China, with America’s regional friends, and with treaty allies matters profoundly to Australia and to global security. Our DC office has been created to further strengthen our relationship by becoming a more active and visible participant in the lively Washington DC think tank debate about defense and national security.

ASPI‘s presence in Washington is aimed at lifting Australia’s profile in the vibrant DC think-tank community, offering the opportunity to help shape policy thinking of the current and future administrations.

About the Role

ASPI’s Washington DC office has an exciting opportunity for an Events Coordinator/Manager to join the team. ASPI DC is looking for an organized, experienced events professional with experience working in think tanks, defense, technology and/or national security to deliver a busy program of events as part of ASPI DC’s small, energetic and proactive team.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the defense and national security landscape in DC, stakeholder engagement experience, and will be confident engaging with senior stakeholders across government, industry and civil society.

As part of the ASPI DC team, the Events Coordinator/Manager will work with ASPI’s Canberra office to develop, coordinate and deliver a busy schedule of events in Washington DC. This will include identifying relevant stakeholders for a range of public and private events, managing event budgets and identifying event topics and speakers.

About You

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following:

• Exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

• Demonstrated ability in organizing and delivering events consistently to a high standard.

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise with people at all levels of government, industry and civil society, both locally and internationally.

• Excellent time management skills and the ability to take initiative, work independently and take ownership of tasks and projects, manage competing priorities and deadlines, respond well to pressure, and work as part of a close-knit team.

• Experience engaging with stakeholders at a range of levels and the ability to represent ASPI in a highly professional and polished manner.

• Demonstrated reliability and the ability to execute sound judgement and discretion when dealing with difficult and complex situations, as well as a willingness and ability to occasionally work after hours.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications (or a demonstrated interest) in international relations, international security, political science, events or communications

• Minimum 2-3 years events experience, and/or experience working in a think tank

• An interest in the Australia-US alliance and defense/national security Remuneration will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
