The SEIU operates an extensive Global Program, based in the Organizing Department, that is premised on the reality that many of the challenges workers face are global in nature. The Global Program is focused on winning SEIU campaigns that have a global component, and in strengthening the global labor movement to confront the interconnected planetary challenges of unchecked multinational corporate power, threats to democracy and human rights, and the climate crisis.

Purpose - To represent and assist the International Union in achieving the Organizing Department’s organizing goals; to design and implement organizing and affiliation plans in collaboration with Local Union Organizing Directors; to plan, in conjunction with International Union and Local Union leaders, large scale comprehensive campaigns, covering large geographic areas, industries, markets, companies, or communities; to direct and manage multi-component, comprehensive campaigns; to build, manage, and maintain campaign teams of International Union staff, local union staff, or special projects staff.

Primary Responsibilities - The Senior Campaign Coordinator has major responsibility for representing and assisting the International Union in carrying out its overall organizing programs and initiatives; for providing leadership in developing and managing innovative, multi-component external organizing campaigns in a global context; coordinating International Union and Local Union campaign resources; building and maintaining relationships with global allies, International Union and Local Union leaders and staff; creating and maintaining campaign structures and managing the work of staff.

In addition, the Senior Campaign Coordinator assigned to the Global Program is responsible for:

  • Coordinating with global partners, both on a bilateral basis and through Global Union Federations, to advance campaign goals.
  • Coordinating with global partners, both on a bilateral basis and through Global Union Federations, to build long-term campaign capacity.
  • Developing long-term, mutually beneficial two-way relationships with key union partners and key Global Union Federation leaders as dictated by SEIU’s global priorities.
  • Developing comprehensive, multi-component campaign plans, including defining an overall campaign strategy, vision and goals; helping shape SMART campaign goals, benchmarks, and tactics for each relevant campaign component, e.g., field, digital, communications, research, legislative.
  • Determining and analyzing key factors and conditions of a company, industry, market and/or community for the development of campaign strategy.
  • Managing the execution of comprehensive campaigns to achieve overall campaign goals and benchmarks at each phase of the campaign; assessing campaign execution and making recommendations on strategic decisions including overseeing campaign operations, determining data management systems to collect, track and analyze relevant data for strategic campaign decision-making and overseeing the utilization of digital strategies and platforms.
  • Directing and managing staff by establishing clear campaign structures, roles, responsibilities, standards, and expectations, including providing support in the recruiting, screening, hiring and orientation of campaign staff.
  • Creating and implementing team systems for mutual accountability and support, including staff meetings, debriefs, training, staff 1:1s, work plans, etc. and responsible for creating a positive and effective team culture of a shared vision, collaboration, inclusion, equity, respect, and innovation.
  • Developing and managing systems and processes, including but not limited to, individual work plans, staff development plans, and training, and providing regular and intentional feedback and coaching that support the growth and development of staff, and carrying out disciplinary-related duties as appropriate.
  • Working with appropriate International Union staff to determine appropriate and strategic allocation of International Union staff and other resources to support the successful execution of campaigns.
  • Overseeing the development and administration of campaign budgets, including authorizing expenditures.
  • Representing the International Union with local union leaders, staff, members, and outside organizations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned in support of the work of the SEIU Global Program, the International Union Organizing Program and/or Division.

Direction and Decision-Making - This position reports to the Campaign Director and/or designated Organizing Department and Division directors.

Education and Experience -

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of external labor organizing experience; or a combination of five (5) years external labor organizing and two (2) years of internal labor organizing experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of campaign planning and management experience, including developing and managing multi-component campaigns; working with interdisciplinary campaign teams.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of direct supervisory or team management experience, including leading campaign teams and staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in being able to function in highly sensitive political environments.
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university is not required, but is a plus.
  • Fluency in at least one language other than English.
  • (Candidates who do not meet the minimum qualifications of experience will not be considered.).

  • Excellent writing, verbal, and analytical communication.
  • Ability to travel and function in a diverse array of global settings, including politically and culturally hostile environments.
  • Ability to determine and analyze key factors and conditions of a company, industry, market and/or community to support the development of a campaign strategy.
  • Ability to develop and manage comprehensive campaigns that effectively integrate and align relevant multiple components, such as field, digital, communications, research, legislative, political, etc.
  • Ability to develop and/or provide direction on development of effective narrative and communications strategies.
  • Ability to develop and/or direct staff to build relationships and alliances with coalition partners or allies in a global context.
  • Ability to develop and/or give direction on the development and execution of relevant political, legislative or regulatory strategies and tactics.
  • Ability to anticipate and assess campaign strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and make strategic recalibrations.
  • Knowledge of digital platforms and tools and their application in organizing campaigns.
  • Ability to direct, supervise and train campaign staff on basic digital tools such as Zoom, PurpleText, EveryAction, VAN Dialer system, etc.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate across teams and disciplines.
  • Ability to establish campaign structures, systems, roles and responsibilities to direct and manage staff and campaign teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to make formal presentations.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of judgment, ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Ability to work with union leaders, both domestic and international, Global Union Federation leaders and staff, and workers in highly complex diverse global settings.
  • Ability to utilize planning and time management tools and practices to plan, prioritize, and effectively manage resources and responsibilities.
  • Ability to handle multiple “priority” projects and meet established timelines.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate training of staff, workers and members.
  • Ability to communicate political and policy priorities

Physical Requirements - The Senior Campaign Coordinator must be available for regular and/or long-term international travel over large geographic areas. The position often requires temporary assignments away from home as well as long and irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekends.
