Position Description

Summary

Organization Summary:

The Latino Coalition for a Healthy California (LCHC) is the State’s leading policy organization advocating for the health of the Latino community in California. For more than 30 years, LCHC has uplifted community voices at the Capitol and has achieved multiple policy victories that have protected and advanced health equity for Latinos and all Californians. Today, LCHC is a multi-issue policy organization advocating for policies and programs that promote health equity and racial justice toward building healthy communities for all Californians.

The Communications Coordinator will work to advance the Latino Coalition for a Healthy Californias’ mission to advance and protect Latino Health. The Communications Coordinator will support the Communications Department with the planning and implementing LCHC’s communications strategy to advance all other department projects, including policy advocacy and statewide programming. The coordinator will primarily manage social media accounts and websites and contribute to graphic design, content creation, and press engagement. This individual will advance innovative strategies to grow LCHC’s brand and influence. They will use their knowledge of Latine and ethnic media to showcase LCHC’s expertise in the health policy space. The Policy Communications Coordinator will report to the Sr. Communications Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications Coordinator’s role will support all functions of the Communications Department, including, but not limited to:

Social Media and Digital Strategy (50%)

  • Support the development of digital content (e.g., social media content, launch materials, public information campaigns, etc.) in different formats (written, graphics, and video)
  • Support posting on LCHC social media accounts, including X (Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, YouTube, etc.
  • Support communications for special projects

Public Affairs & Outreach (40%)

  • Support the development of communication materials (e.g., fact sheets, blog posts, press releases, media pitches, statements, quotes, opinion editorials, etc.)
  • Support press operations (managing contact lists, creating press lists, monitoring press clips and media, handling media requests, etc.)
  • Support event creation and management efforts (in-person & virtual events)

Administrative (10%)

  • Support the development of organizational content (e.g., newsletters)
  • Support communications branch in any tracking and reporting of metrics related to grants or other reporting
  • Support the creation of LCHC’s annual impact report

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participate in internal planning committees
  • Work with Health Justice Fellow
  • Any additional communications and organizational support, as needed

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree OR equivalent experience is required.
  • Recent graduates are welcome.
  • Related experience including but not limited to the following fields, preferred: Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Political Science, Public Administration, Public Relations, Social Welfare.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Canva, Photoshop, and other design software and tools
  • Advanced understanding of Hootsuite and other social media management software and tools
  • Knowledge of WordPress and other website management software and tools
  • Knowledge of the California Legislative process
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain relationships
  • Self-starter/motivated
  • Able to manage multiple projects and tasks at a time
  • Fluency in Spanish is highly desired

Organizational Relationship

The Communications Associate will work to advance the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California's mission to advance and protect Latine Health in California by: supporting all functions of the Communications Department, communications staff, and the communications needs for all LCHC departments.

Physical Demands

  • Sitting, walking, and listening for up to 6-8 hours per day
  • Computer keyboarding an average of 6-8 hours per day.
  • Travel by ground or air in California and across the State, as needed

Work Environment

  • The LCHC team is currently working virtually with occasional in person attendance to meetings, events, and conferences
