Background

The duration of the assignment is 364 days. Whereas an external candidate will be offered a temporary appointment; subject to release agreements, staff members in UN Women may be administered as a temporary assignment and staff members in the UN Common system may be administered under a loan arrangement.

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) is a partnership between the United Nations, Member States, and the civil society, which supports women led and women’s rights organizations working to build peace and provide humanitarian response throughout the world. Since the end of 2016, the WPHF has supported over 1000 civil society organizations and is present in more than 30 countries.

UN Women hosts the Secretariat of the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund. The WPHF Secretariat provides support to the Funding Board, mobilizes resources from Governments, companies, foundations and individuals, designs funding windows and mechanisms, provides day to day support to Country Offices implementing WPHF programmes, ensures timely and quality monitoring and reporting. The Secretariat’s mandate is also to strengthen stakeholders’ knowledge of and engagement with women, peace and security issues through proper internal and external communications, advocacy and outreach. Finally, the Secretariat provides knowledge management services for the WPHF, and manages the Community of Practice (CoP) for WPHF partners and grantees.

Under the direct supervision of the WPHF Communications and Advocacy Specialist – Peace, Security and Resilience (P4) – the Communications and Outreach Analyst will support the drafting, content creation and management of WPHF’s social media channels and the wider communications functions of the various units of the Secretariat of the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund, including the RRW, targeting a wide range of audiences to contribute to the enhanced visibility and global reach of WPHF’s activities, projects, partners and impact.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Coordinate WPHF’s global social media practices to enhance visibility of the Fund, including the RRW, across its social platforms, building on the strong foundation established.

  • Draft language, curate content and manage approval process of all assets for WPHF social media channels
  • Manage and schedule approved content across WPHF social media platforms
  • Collaborate with WPHF program colleagues to draft social language that accurately and compellingly communicates WPHF activities and impact
  • Monitor new developments, innovative practices and strategies in the realm of social media to grow followers and deepen engagement of various audiences
  • Support in the systematization and organization of all WPHF social media and communications language and content

2. Contribute to regular social media outreach and engagement to amplify WPHF’s work, RRW impact and WPSHA issues

  • Draft regular messaging and outreach language for WPHF’s global social media platforms in English to increase visibility of the Fund’s work and issue areas
  • Oversee translation of English posts into multiple languages, including French, Spanish and Arabic
  • Support the regular monitoring, community management and engagement of WPHF global social media platforms
  • Support the continued expansion of all WPHF social media channel audiences
  • Monitor and use opportunities to tap into relevant ongoing conversations, initiatives and campaigns
  • Support the regular analytics reporting of social media outreach

3. Support in the design, execution and evaluation of strategies to amplify all WPHF initiatives, including RRW, Window for WHRDs, events and campaigns

  • Support in the development and execution of social media strategies aligned with WPHF’s wider communications plans to amplify events, campaigns and relevant international days, e.g. International Women’s Day, International Day of Peace, etc
  • Oversee the development of social media assets for campaigns and events in multiple languages, in collaboration with the WPHF Audio Visual and Multimedia Consultant and Communications, Advocacy and Knowledge Management Specialist
  • Develop and disseminate social media packages for campaigns, relevant international days and large events in English, Spanish, French and Arabic
  • Explore live conversations, calls for action and social media activations, as appropriate
  • Support social media partnerships
  • Collaborate with visual designers to conceptualize social media and communications assets
  • Support the production of new video assets and facilitate interviews with WPHF CSO, UN and donor partners

4. Support the broader communications outputs and effective storytelling goals of the WPHF global secretariat, including the RRW unit.

  • Draft and manage content for the WPHF website in multiple languages
  • Support the facilitation of interviews of WPHF grantee partners and beneficiaries
  • Draft compelling pieces for effective storytelling, profiling the perspective and impact WPHF-supported peacebuilders, humanitarians and human rights defenders
  • Coordinate the drafting and placement of opinion pieces, editorials, and analysis by WPHF team members under the supervision of the Communications and Advocacy Specialist
  • Support the wider communications needs of the WPHF team, including the RRW, as necessary
  • Engage in targeted outreach to journalists and other media contacts
  • Coordinate with programme colleagues on status of new CSO partner onboarding to update country pages
  • Analyze media trends and identify opportunities for WPHF’s engagement in relevant conversations around relevant WPS and humanitarian issues
  • Attend events, meetings and trainings - both online and in person – relevant to WPHF and its work

FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in international relations / development, women’s rights, social sciences, communications, public relations, journalism or relevant field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of demonstrable experience working on communications, public advocacy, press relations, media outreach and/ or social media engagement for civil society and or UN member states.
  • Experience creating, drafting and managing engaging content for various social media channels for missions focused on women, peace and security and humanitarian issues is required.
  • Experience in writing, journalism and narrative storytelling, amplifying the voices of partners and beneficiaries, particularly local women’s organizations in fragile settings is required.
  • Experience amplifying the impact of non-profit missions with WPSHA focus and coordinating effective communications and messaging across website and social media channels is required.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Working knowledge of Spanish or French is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable (French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
