Compensation: $134,000/annually, generous benefits package

Vice President of Community Impact- Position Summary

The Vice President of Community Impact (VPCI) is responsible for leading, managing, and supporting the implementation of FLY’s mission-based programs, services, and youth voice initiatives at a local level in pursuit of organizational impact. Equal parts strategist, equal parts implementer, this role is responsible for leading a team of County Directors to translate programmatic theory to community responsive practices, while ensuring implementation aligns with FLY’s commitment to equity, justice, and excellence. Specifically, this position helps ensure effective implementation of programs in fidelity to FLY’s Theory of Change while adapting and evolving program models in response to shifting external environments and data informed strategies. They will be responsible for supporting county directors to grow and scale programs in established communities, elevate and activate youth voice through a set of locally-focused initiatives, and leverage community and systems partnerships towards impact.

 

The VPCI is an internal facing position, with strategic outward facing presence to support county leaders and the executive team to continue to build the reputation and brand of FLY as a collaborative, learning and community responsive organization. The VPCI is part of FLY’s Executive Team including the Vice President of Finance and Operations, the Vice President of Talent and Culture, the Chief Strategy Officer, the Chief Advancement Officer, the Chief Operating Officer, and the President & CEO. The position supervises three program County Directors (Alameda, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties) and will eventually supervise a fourth County Director (Contra Costa). The VPoCI is responsible for leading a programmatic staff of approximately 70 full-time and part-time positions, and approximately 150 volunteers. Additionally, the Youth Voice Initiatives partner with approximately 60 youth across three counties and statewide to elevate and activate youth voices to achieve organizational and mission goals. 

This position requires a highly effective team leader whose passion for FLY’s mission is matched with strategic, visionary, and tactical leadership. The ideal candidate is highly collaborative with strong decision-making skills in the face of complex challenges, and a proven track record of managing and scaling programs and leading multi-disciplinary teams across multiple communities. They will be flexible and adaptable while being a strong implementer that manages towards outcomes and model fidelity.  

 

Position Responsibilities

Programmatic Strategy and Mission-driven Leadership

  • Oversee program implementation and performance in three established counties – Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo– and eventually a fourth county (Contra Costa). 
  • Supervise and support County Directors to ensure that government contracts, service delivery and program performance align and achieve FLY’s mission as articulated by annual goals and targets.
  • Supervise and support County Directors to ensure program alignment and facilitate learning across counties, supporting the evolution of program models as needed while ensuring fidelity to Theory of Change.
  • Ensure programs are operating at scale in established counties in response to community need, resource investment, and FLY’s strategic priorities.
  • Work with the Chief Strategy Officer to transition leadership and oversight of FLY’s fourth county of operations within one year to 18 months of assuming the role. 
  • Ensure effective implementation, evaluation, refinement, and evolution of FLY’s Theory of Change (TOC) and program models:
  • Collaborates with county directors to ensure the TOC is implemented and adapted with fidelity while allowing for county nuance to be responsive to community need;
  • Leads agency wide efforts to develop and refine FLY’s TOC and ensures program models align, including convening program and E&L leadership to develop and execute annual TOC implementation agendas;
  • Leads agency efforts to ensure programs, services, and youth initiatives are delivered to FLY’s standards of quality and achieve intended outcomes. 
  • Ensure programs and initiatives are designed and executed in a way that centers (racial) equity and ensures equity of outcomes for all youth.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Strategy Officer to ensure that FLY’s systems change work and agency wide youth voice initiatives are adapted and integrated into existing communities as intended and in ways that reinforce programmatic presence.

 

Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as the internal lead and decision-maker on design, implementation, and sustainability of programs and youth voice initiatives in established communities. 
  • Collaborate with the executive and senior leadership responsible for organizational infrastructure to ensure that:  
  • Staff training agendas are responsive to professional development and direct service needs (Talent);
  • Budgeting and resource decisions reflect organizational priorities and commitments related to program and service delivery (Finance and Compliance);
  • Data collection and program reporting provide timely and accurate insight into program performance and organizational learning (Evaluation and Learning)
  • Collaborate with the Development team to ensure that programmatic impact, program innovation, and youth voice is featured in our fundraising and communications efforts while centering equity and helping to shift narratives about youth impacted by the system.
  • Collaborate with the COO to ensure that programmatic practices reflect organizational culture and vice versa, and that FLY’s values and commitment to equity and justice translate to program staff engagement. 

Stakeholder and Board Engagement

  • Professionally and effectively represent FLY and its programs to government, funding and field sources at meetings, conferences and speaking engagements, serving as an ambassador and advocate for FLY and promoting the advancement of FLY’s mission.  
  • Support County Directors to steward key local government and community stakeholder relationships across all three counties, and represent executive level organizational presence in local collaborative spaces, when necessary.
  • Steward state and federal government stakeholders where contracts span across multiple counties and collaborate closely with County Directors to ensure alignment and coordination.
  • Support COO in engaging FLY’s Board of Directors as appropriate to ensure good missing grounding and board governance related to community impact. Staff and serve as primary liaison for board engagement activities with programs. 
  • Support the CEO and the Chief Advancement Officer in translating programmatic and mission impact to compelling storytelling in service of FLY’s fundraising efforts.
