Our mission is to inspire and mobilize the U.S. Catholic community to care for creation and achieve climate justice through the lens of integral ecology. We are inspired by Pope Francis' call to action, and the U.S. Catholic community's growing interest in these issues. Recognizing the power of the collective voice, we work in close partnership with our partners and constituents, to manifest transformational solutions that commensurate with the challenge of the climate crisis.

Position Summary: The Policy Advisor develops and implements strategies that advance the organization's faith-based positions on national and international policies, under the supervision of the Executive Director, and in close collaboration with partners and constituents.

  • Manage the Encounter for Our Common Home campaign, an advocacy coalition of Catholic constituents and organizations;
  • Represent the organization in Catholic, interfaith, and multi-sectoral advocacy networks and coalitions;
  • Conduct legislative and policy research and analysis and propose related strategies;
  • Draft policy positions for constituents, partners, policy makers, media, publications, websites, and social media, including LTEs, op-eds, articles, blogs, letters, petitions, and posts;
  • Mobilize and increase organizational and constituent support for policy positions;
  • Stay current on relevant policy, legislative and regulatory developments;
  • Manage the policy content on the Covenant and Godsplanet.us websites;
  • Assist in the development of webinars and other offerings related to education on public policies; and
  • Collaborate with relevant staff on increasing engagement of Catholic youth and young adults in policy and advocacy efforts.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, environmental or energy policy, political science, or international affairs;
  • At least 2 years of experience working on climate and energy policy in a federal legislative setting on Capitol Hill or at a nonprofit organization;
  • Demonstrated skills in collaboration, leadership, strategy, and organizing;
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and with guidance;
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills;
  • Commitment to, knowledge of, or experience in climate solutions and environmental justice;
  • Willingness to advocate from Catholic and faith-based perspectives;
  • Knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching preferred;
  • Desire to enact policy solutions that are transformational and commensurate with the scale of the climate crisis;
  • Willingness to pitch in at all levels; and
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize among and efficiently manage multiple assignments and meet critical deadlines.

Status: Full-time, benefits-eligible. Benefits include 2 weeks vacation, 2 weeks sick-leave, medical, dental and long term disability insurance, 12 holidays plus Christmas week off. This position is based in Washington, D.C.

Location, Time, and Travel Requirements: The Covenant operates in both hybrid and remote work environments. Physical presence in the office is expected at least one day per week. Some travel may be required.
