Position Overview

The Specialist for Outreach supports the management of Outreach and Equity programs in the Science Education Programs department and reports to the Director of Outreach and Equity Programs. This includes programs as assigned, currently including co-leading the STEM Research and Action Grants, and supporting the Research Teacher Conferences. The Specialist for Outreach also makes connections with other local and national mission-aligned organizations to further advance the Society’s Outreach and Equity Programs. 

Essential Functions

  • Leads the online application process for the STEM Action and Research grant programs and manages the evaluation and selection process annually.
  • Recruits grantees of diverse backgrounds, and seeks programs and teachers not currently served by the Society’s programs and shares the Society’s commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Builds teacher and grantee community initiatives, creates and shares professional development opportunities and evaluation of the programs for continual improvement.
  • Manages grantee reporting, grant payments, program evaluation, statistics, and sponsor reports.
  • Coordinates efforts with the advancement and development teams around potential financial support.
  • Provides customer service to grantees and applicants via phone and email.
  • Gathers educator and student impact stories and photos for blogs, website, and sponsors.
  • Supports outreach-related events several times a year by assisting with planning, with a special focus on Research Teacher Conferences. This includes but is not limited to recruiting attendees, promoting event online and via email, collecting attendee information via electronic systems, arranging for space and supply needs, and overseeing volunteers.
  • Aids in the processing of online applications and evaluation processes for all Society programs, including the competitions, throughout the year.
  • Completes other projects and duties as assigned.
  • Attends all education programs, which requires at least 2 weeks of travel annually.

Prior Education and Experience

Required:

  • Undergraduate degree and a minimum of 2 years work experience
  • Computer proficiency including: Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Desirable:

  • A degree in education or a STEM field
  • Master’s Degree or additional years of work experience
  • Teaching experience at the middle school or high school level
  • Experience working with underserved populations in STEM fields
  • An interest in or experience with non-profit management
  • Program or project management experience
  • Database knowledge (Access, The Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, or other database software) and experience with online application and evaluation systems
