Assistant Principal Position Description

Under the direction of the Principal, the Assistant Principal is a member of the school leadership team. This role supports the campus with administrative tasks related to providing instructional and organizational leadership, such as organizing meetings, setting up professional development sessions, coaching teachers, supporting school schedules, and coordinating family engagement and outreach. The Assistant Principal works with all stakeholders to create a common vision for the school that centers on Montessori, Anti-Bias/Anti-Racist (ABAR), trauma-informed, and wellness practices.  


Major Duties and Responsibilities

School Leadership & Staff Development

  • Shares the duties of running the campus by executing an inspiring vision that is in line with the entire organization and sets high standards for students, staff, and families.
  • Collaborates with the Principal, Primary and Elementary Coaches, and additional staff as required to provide curriculum implementation guidance to all teachers including direct classroom observation and coaching as required.
  • Develops and delivers professional development based on the needs of the school through data analysis and teachers' identified areas of need.
  • Articulates a clear instructional vision with a school-wide focus on equity, high-fidelity Montessori, and data-driven instruction grounded in child development.
  • Demonstrates the importance of feedback, documentation, and informal development discussions which supplement the annual performance review.
  • Helps teachers develop and implement classroom-based, developmentally appropriate interventions for individual children and groups of children to enhance their acquisition of social/emotional and cognitive skills.
  • Analyzes teacher practice through ongoing classroom observations, data analysis, and the examination of student work to support continuous professional growth
  • Facilitates and participates in grade-level team planning meetings.


Lead High-Quality Intervention Programs

  • Participates in the Student Support Team (SST) process when there are academic concerns.
  • Regularly analyzes student data in order to support teachers in delivering high-quality interventions.
  • Collaborates with special education leadership to provide an outstanding program to students with disabilities.
  • Supports and monitors the summer school program.


Campus Culture Leadership

  • Creates and plans parent engagement activities with the support of campus leadership and the operations team.
  • Models the school’s core values and set the standard for student and staff behavior.
  • Manages, monitors, and sustains an effective behavior management program.
  • Encourages, supports, and maintains parent buy-in for school-wide behavior systems.
  • Communicates frequently and is accessible to students and parents.
  • Engages all families in the life of the school.

School Operations and Testing Coordination

  • Assists in developing teacher and student schedules.
  • Oversees the daily management of the schedule including, but not limited to class/duty coverage for absences.
  • Demonstrate long-term strategic and systems-oriented thinking and planning skills to meet student social-emotional and academic goals.
  • Serve as the campus assessment coordinator for NWEA MAP, PARCC, ACCESS, Teaching Strategies, and DRA.
  • Collaborate with Operations leadership to develop and implement student support systems and processes to include rotation schedules, extended day programming to support school cultural cohesion, and data management as needed. 

A successful candidate may possess the following: 

  • Have a firm commitment to upholding the school’s mission and anti-bias/anti-racist pedagogy.
  • Possess a Master’s Degree in Education, with Montessori training preferred
  • Have at least 5 years of experience working in education, preferably in a public or urban setting.
  • Previous experience managing people and/or projects with identified outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse students and families.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Self-motivation, and ability to effectively prioritize when juggling competing priorities.
  • Ability to think strategically, translate thoughts into action, and follow through with all details.
  • Humility, a sense of humor, and flexibility in an entrepreneurial environment.
