Ranking Member James P. McGovern and the House Committee on Rules Democratic staff seek a new Professional Staff Member. In this role, a professional staffer will work closely with House committees, Member offices, the office of the Parliamentarian, and House Democratic Leadership. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working on Capitol Hill on a variety of issues; this is not an entry-level position. A strong interest in learning more about House rules and procedure is a must.

 Responsibilities and Duties:  

  1. Staff the Democratic members of the Committee during hearings, markups, and debates on the floor.
  2. Draft talking points, bill summaries, and related materials regarding measures coming before the Committee. 
  3. Review amendments submitted to the Committee and coordinate with Member offices as required.
  4. Assist in the research and review of proposals to change the House rules, and other original jurisdiction matters.
  5. Work closely with the communications team on public messaging.

Qualifications and Skills:

  1. Experience working in a fast-paced environment requiring detailed accuracy and organization.
  2. Excellent writing and analytical skills and strong political judgment. 
  3. Willingness to pitch in and do whatever helps the team, large or small.
  4. Ability to work late hours when Committee business requires it. 
  5. Experience collaborating with Tri-Caucus offices is a plus.
  6. Massachusetts ties are a plus.

The starting salary for this position will fall in the range of $100,000 to $130,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
