Job Description
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation is seeking a strategic and collaborative Director of Federal Affairs to help lead advocacy efforts on energy, environmental, and transportation policy issues impacting the automotive industry.
This role will serve as a key member of the Federal Affairs team, helping shape and execute advocacy strategies related to vehicle emissions, electrification, charging infrastructure, chemical and materials policy, transportation and infrastructure investment, manufacturing, and broader sustainability initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring strong Capitol Hill relationships, deep experience navigating complex legislative and political environments involving climate, energy, and environmental policy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead advocacy efforts related to federal energy, environmental, and transportation policy priorities impacting the automotive sector and its suppliers.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with congressional offices, committee staff, and external stakeholders.
- Monitor and engage on legislative activity related to emissions standards, vehicle electrification, charging infrastructure deployment, chemical and materials policy, recycling, manufacturing, and infrastructure investment.
- Help shape and implement strategic advocacy plans that advance Auto Innovators’ policy priorities and support member company objectives.
- Coordinate closely with internal policy, regulatory, legal, and communications teams to ensure integrated advocacy strategies.
- Draft policy analyses, briefing materials, testimony, correspondence, legislation, and strategic communications for Congress and federal agencies.
- Represent the association in coalition meetings, stakeholder discussions, and external events.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of federal environmental, energy, and transportation policy frameworks, including familiarity with congressional committee activity.
- Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with policymakers, coalition partners, and industry stakeholders.
- Strong strategic judgment and ability to operate effectively in fast-moving legislative and regulatory environments.
- Ability to translate complex technical and regulatory issues into clear policy and compelling advocacy strategies.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across diverse internal and external stakeholder groups.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- At least 10 years of experience, with time on Capitol Hill, within the Executive Branch, or in a related government affairs role.
- Experience working at a trade association is a strong plus.
- Experience working on energy, environmental, infrastructure, climate, manufacturing, or transportation policy issues strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with congressional committee and floor processes
- Existing relationships with congressional offices, relevant committees, and federal agencies preferred.
- Passion for the auto industry and advancing policies that support innovation, manufacturing competitiveness, and the future of mobility.
To provide greater transparency to candidates, we share base pay ranges for all US-based job postings regardless of state. We set standard base pay ranges for all roles based on function, level, and country location, benchmarked against similar-stage growth companies. The anticipated salary range for this position at Director level is $140,000 to $175,000. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate location, skills, depth of work experience, and relevant licenses/credentials, and may vary from the range listed. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, medical benefits, 401(k) plan, and other company perk programs.
