The Development and External Affairs Manager is an essential member of Power of Two’s development team who works closely with the Chief External Affairs Officer and Executive Director to further the organization’s fundraising, government relations, and communications efforts. Specifically, they will project manage all aspects of government engagement as well as the development and communications calendar to ensure that they are executed well. They will be accountable for institutional giving and manage the grant development process, for prospective foundation, government and corporate opportunities. They will write and update various communication materials such as briefings, one-pagers and impact documents for multiple audiences, including government officials, as well as create programmatic content for use on social media and craft organizational statements on relevant issues. 

Responsibilities 

Development: 

  • Support all development activities, working closely with the Executive Director and Chief External Affairs Officer to help develop and execute a plan for securing the resources needed to meet or exceed the organization’s annual budget and expand and diversify sources of support, both public and private
  • Manage the grant proposal and report development process, including setting timelines, gathering and synthesizing appropriate information from various departments including Finance and Program, and ensuring appropriate review and signoffs prior to submission
  • Write compelling foundation, government and corporate grant proposals, letters of inquiry, follow-up correspondence, interim and final reports, and thank you letters.
  • Collaborate with program staff to describe program design and outcomes accurately
  • Participate in meetings, as needed, keeping detailed notes of key takeaways and next steps, and ensuring that there is appropriate follow-up and follow-through 
  • Research prospective funding opportunities and partnerships
  • Work closely with external grant consultants to ensure that they have access to the information they need and submit compelling proposals in a timely manner
  • Stay up-to-date on grant-making and philanthropic trends
  • Responsible for ensuring the optimal use and functioning of Salesforce as well as updating and maintaining records of corporate contributors, foundation grants and government contracts
  • Maintain confidentiality in regard to donor information and ensure the highest standard of quality in interactions with and materials geared toward institutional donors 
  • Support the rest of the development team with fundraising events.

External Affairs: 

  • Write briefs for local, state, and federal elected officials and organize and participate in meetings. Serve as the lead voice for Power of Two with such officials when assigned
  • Work collaboratively to help build and shape the policy and advocacy aspect of the strategic plan once the organization secures funding for its execution
  • Develop and maintain relationships with partners in the policy space to ensure that the organization’s story and family voices are included in larger community advocacy efforts
  • Implement a comprehensive external community engagement plan and strategy to build positive brand perception and understanding of Power of Two
  • Build storytelling capacity of staff to promote the organization’s impact
  • Manage strategy and implementation in partnership with the Chief External Affairs Officer
  • Create a robust schedule of postings and ensure consistent, thoughtful and relevant activity on Power of Two’s social media accounts as well as respond in a timely manner to questions and queries received on these channels
  • Craft regular programmatic posts such as parenting reflections, weekly wisdom from PO2 babies, and team member and family spotlights
  • Assist in the creation of outward-facing communications media and materials (newsletters, media summaries, press releases, PowerPoint decks, etc.)
  • Responsible for crafting organizational responses to relevant issues, and assisting with research for op-eds, and issue-related social media posts
  • Collaborate with program staff in the creation of program-specific media (flyers, presentations, etc.)
  • In collaboration with the Chief External Affairs Officer, liaise with external videographers or production companies to develop and produce compelling organizational videos
  • Manage Development and External Affairs Associate
  • Manage interns and any part-time, seasonal employees
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent prior experience is required for this role. We seek candidates with 5-6 years of professional experience, experience and with foundation and corporate giving is preferred. They must possess excellent writing, editing, and marketing skills with a proven ability to customize communications to multiple audiences. Strong computer skills and proficiency with Salesforce, Google Office Suite and Microsoft Office are needed to be successful in this position, and WordPress experience is a plus. As an organization centering justice and racial equity, candidates must have proven success in building and managing relationships with Black, Brown and Indigenous communities and coworkers. 

The Development and External Affairs Manager is a skilled storyteller. In addition, they possess superior attention to detail, strong organizational and project management skills, and have the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a small team. Salary: $80,000 to $85,000
