The National Children’s Museum is a world-class museum that aims to spark the imagination and encourage children to dream. National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs.

As Communications + Digital Manager, reporting to the Vice President of External Affairs, you will be a critical member of the External Affairs Team. You will help ensure success of the Museum’s ongoing communications efforts across departments, serve as the chief copywriter and editor, and support the daily operations of the Museum’s digital work. 

What you’ll do: 

  • Write and edit copy for all Museum materials, including emails to visitors, members and supporters, website, social media, marketing materials, press materials, and event materials; 
  • Manage an institution-wide communications calendar; 
  • Help plan the Museum’s long-term communications and public relations strategy; 
  • Ensure the consistency of the Museum’s brand voice across all materials and platforms;
  • Create templates, scripts and talking points for visitor facing team members and support the infusion of the brand voice into visitor interactions;
  • Manage the Museum’s social media accounts, create compelling social content, track social media results, and actively engage with Museum’s social community; 
  • Draft press releases, distribution lists, media kits, and media talking points;
  • Support operations and maximize efficiency of digital platforms, including the Museum website, constituent relationship management system, and email marketing tools; 
  • Provide editorial support to the Advancement team, including writing and managing the production of the Museum’s annual impact report, reviewing grants and proposals, and more
  • Support the production and project management of key initiatives from a digital and communications perspective, including the Museum’s Climate Action Heroes exhibit distribution, ongoing Roundtable events, and other special projects like the institution’s 50th anniversary suite of events; 
  • Recruit and provide leadership for seasonal social media/communications interns;
  • Support other External Affairs and institutional communications and digital work as needed. 


What we believe are important experiences and traits for this role: 

  • Bachelor’s degree. (A degree in one or more relevant fields, including journalism, marketing, communications, and/or museum studies is preferred.) 
  • 5+ years of communications experience, which could include internships. 
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, including creative writing, editing, social media, proofreading, and attention to detail. 
  • Ability to tailor messaging and adapt tone and voice to diverse audiences, including donors, Museum members, and the general public. 
  • Prior experience with project management and maintaining attention to detail. 
  • Prior experience with HTML and CSS; 
  • Prior experience with email marketing tools; experience with EMMA email marketing a plus;
  • Excellent decision-making skills; ability to balance multiple time-critical projects and pivot quickly; 
  • Knowledge of industry and key platform trends;
  • Team player who values a collaborative and fast-paced working environment;
